How to Transition Back to Your Natural Hair Color

Sometimes, you just want to get back to your roots.

There is nothing more satisfying than a dye job.

Fresh color, smooth strands and shine are the key ingredients to creating the perfect hairstyle. But what happens when you want to go back to your roots? Literally.

Once you start coloring your hair, you’ll almost feel like you’re stuck in a never-ending cycle. But don’t worry, if you want to get back to your natural hair color, it’s totally achievable – and you won’t damage your hair in the process.

Here, we spoke with Jamie Mazzei, Creative Director of NuBest Salon & Spa in Manhasset, NY to learn more.

What are the advantages of restoring natural hair color?

For beginners, it will require less maintenance. This means you can spend less time in the hairdressing chair and spend less money on professional shampoos and conditioners. Plus, your hair may end up looking better in the long run.

“[You’ll] no longer need to complete a rooting session every six to eight weeks,” Mazzei shares with InStyle. “If your color is much lighter than your natural [color], the benefit of going back to natural may be healthier hair.”

What’s the downside?

If you’re not someone who fully embraces the concept of patience, going back to your natural color may feel like a bit of a drag.

“Most people’s hair grows about half an inch a month,” shares the hair expert. “At this rate, your hair will grow six inches in a year. Getting your natural color back will be a commitment – especially if you have long hair.”

But hey, if you like the whole gradient look, you can definitely enjoy the ride.

What’s the best way to restore your natural hair color?

For those who don’t want to play the long game, the good news is that you don’t have to.

“Most clients find that they can get through the transition more gracefully with the help of at-home semi-permanent hair color shampoos and hair color conditioners,” says Mazzei. “I like this option because [these] only deposit on previously color-treated hair because it has more pores than regrowth. This allows consumers to darken color-treated hair in the process to better match the roots, or even just to keep the previously color-treated hair a better shade.”

In terms of products to use, Mazzei recommends adding Celeb Luxury Gem Lites ColorWash Color Dye Shampoo and Celeb Luxury Gem Lites Colorditioner Color Deposition Conditioner with BondFix Bond Repair into your daily wash routine.

“It’s a semi-permanent direct dye in shampoo and conditioner that helps give your hair color a fresh look and allows you to transition more gracefully as your hair regains its natural color,” he explains. “Because it’s a semi-permanent color in shampoos and conditioners, the process is very simple.”

How to keep your hair healthy during the transition.

“As your hair transitions from a color treatment to a natural treatment, you may need to change your hair care routine,” Mazzei shares. “As your hair grows out, you may find that you need a different shampoo for the roots because you’re no longer color treating them. Using a conditioner with moisture on the rest of your hair may be best for a while, since it’s been color-treated.”

Should you cut your hair and start over?

Your mind, your choice – of course, you don’t have to do it unless you want to.

“In this case, a fresh start and a new look could be great,” Mazzei says. “It all depends on the comfort level of the client. It’s okay to create custom colors, but in this case it’s important not to touch the root cause or you’ll be back to square one.”
