Having an attractive head of thick hair may feel completely impossible – especially if you have fine, thinning or sparse hair – but there are a few tips and tricks that will allow you to quickly increase the volume of your hair. In fact, you may be surprised at the amount you can create. From strategic volumizing hairstyles to creative styling products to blow-drying techniques that make hair look fuller, we asked some professional stylists to share their favorite ways to instantly volumize.

Thickening Powder

Don’t underestimate the volumizing power of setting powders! This handy hair care product is often used to create better hold for hairstyles, but it can also create volume and fullness.

Hair stylist Brooke Clark says, “Starting at the top of your head, lift up your roots and spray the powder on the roots. ” “Repeat until the desired amount is in your hair, then rub gently with your fingers.” You can wear your hair down or style it later. Either way, this technique will leave the hair slightly rough at the roots so you can re-fluff your hair as needed.

Volumizing Mousse

In addition to texturizing products, keep a volumizing mousse in your hair care arsenal. This works on damp hair and can produce some serious volume. “Volumizing mousse instantly creates thick strands from root to tip while leaving hair shiny and moving-even the finest, curliest strands,” says Trace Henningsen, celebrity hairstylist and Leonor Greyl ambassador.

Glamorous ponytails

Here’s a quick way to make your ponytail look like you’ve doubled the amount of hair you have. “Take two elastic bands and split your hair horizontally into two sections – right behind your ears,” says Jill Marinello, hairstylist and owner of WISH Hair Studio. “Tie a small half-ponytail at the crown, then part the section underneath vertically. Pull both sections over the other pony on top of the previous one.” This makes the fine hair look twice as long as it was. It also reduces tension, which is important for thin or sparse hair.

Root/scalp concealer

A bare scalp can make your hair look thin, and gray roots can create the illusion of a wider scalp. Root concealer, scalp foundation or tinted dry shampoo can solve both problems – with very little effort on your part.

“Run a comb through your hair to fluff it to its maximum, then blow dry it slightly upside down and flip it over,” advises Katelyn Ellsworth, hairstylist and founder of The Roslyn. “Next, spray into the crown along the parting line. This will eliminate any gray hair or any thinning in the crown. Finish with your favorite hairspray and your hair will be instantly fuller and overnight.” You can also try loose powder and sponge products.

Blow dry upside down

You may have seen the “upside down blow dry” in movies and commercials, but it’s not just the movies. This technique for adding volume to hair does work, says Henningsen: “Instead of using the nozzle on the hair dryer, blow dry your hair upside down. Then, once the roots are dry, flip the hair over and use the nozzle on the hair dryer and a boar bristle round brush to smooth out the ends. This will create an eternity of maximum volume!”

Velcro Rollers

To further maximize volume, blow dry and then rip open some Velcro rollers, says Henningsen: “Blow dry each section, then wrap them in Velcro rollers and let them cool for 15 minutes before removing.” “The more you overguide the rollers, the more volume you get.”

Damp and dry

To quickly add volume to already dry hair, try this trick from Ellsworth. “Use a Mr. Water bottle to spray on the hairline and roots of the head to gently moisten the hair,” she says. “Then use a high-temperature blow-dryer and move forward, or use a blow-dryer brush to lift hair off the scalp until it’s completely dry.” Give it a little cool air and you’re ready to go.
